For two weeks at the end of August Devizes is transformed as we welcome some of the best street performers, contemporary circus acts, dancers, musicians and walkabout shows from across the UK and Europe to amaze, entertain and inspire you!
This traditional event dates back to 1955 when it was started by JIm Jennings. It is now, we think, the only one of its kind in the country! As the confetti canons fire, buy your own bags of confetti from the stalls and throw it at your friends!
There is no \’battle\’ as such, just a very silly half hour during which a lot of fun is had and a lot of confetti is thrown about. Expect to get \’attacked\’ by complete strangers throwing paper! As the confetti runs out and dusk falls a firework display rounds off the evening. There\’s also a Jennings fairground in the Market Place.
As far as we know Devizes is the only town that has a confetti battle tradition. Confetti throwing was apparently a popular thing to do in early carnivals in England.
the Devizes Carnival Procession brings the town alive with vibrant walking groups and thousands of people lining the streets. This year the Carnival will be joined by the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band and the Wessex Military Band on procession.
Carnival is the culmination of masses of hard work on the part of the participants and a real spectacle. This year, we will be exploring the theme of India to celebrate 70 years of independence. Enter the Carnival as a group or individual, as a walking group or on a float.
